about

CULTURAL DISSONANCE continues the evolution begun on EVERYTHING IS AN ENEMY to further push the boundaries of conventional genres. As a foundational perspective for composition, CULTURAL DISSONANCE is a mashup between ideas about dissonance in music and the psychological phenomenon of cognitive dissonance.

growing up in the 1970s in the outer suburbs of a big city, I formed opinions about culture that sat on both sides of a very definite fence. Liking both classical music and ice hockey at the same time provoked an odd sense of being both 'us' and 'them' at the same time.

As my music and art interests lead me further from the mainstream and into experimental territory it was hard to be in both camps at once. In the early 80s my interests lead to being stared at, having obscenities screamed at me, and in the worst cases threats of violence...there's too many memories of close calls. i have always tried to balance this kind of cultural duality, working to bring the fringe into the mainstream. travel has been an opportunity to explore many aspects of many different cultures and bring them into my work.

'transhumance I' - music unites us across the globe. the 12 tones of the chromatic scale have been the building blocks of millions of compositions, this is one attempt to use them.

'no minus points for extra tiger' - if you play the game, you must always be prepared for the most unfortunate outcomes.

'foreign mind' - travelling to faraway places requires a mindset of reverence and respect. inflexibility is not a sound option.

'nothing is accidental' - for the cynical: wrong, error, mistake, incorrect. for the spiritual: everything happens for a reason.

'transhumance II' - music is a mathematical object. at what point do the 12 tones of one composition differntiate themselves from any other 12 tones that randomly occur in the same order?
